Hamas says it lost contact with group holding last living American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander

The terrorist organization Hamas on Tuesday said that it lost contact with one of its groups that is responsible for holding its last living American-Israeli hostage, Edan Alexander

The militant group, which is responsible for starting the war in Gaza that began after it attacked Israel in 2023, said the wing that held Alexander was in an area that was bombarded by Israel, and it has not heard from them since.

"We announce that we have lost contact with the group holding soldier Edan Alexander following a direct strike on their location," Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida said in a statement on Tuesday. "We are still trying to reach them at this moment."

It is not clear if the group has been reached as of Wednesday, and it is not clear when Hamas lost communication with the group, or if it is, in fact, true. Obeida did not provide proof for his claims, or specify where the strike took place. But footage as recently as Saturday showed Alexander, who is originally from New Jersey, alive, per BBC News.

The 21-year-old was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, but was raised in New Jersey. Alexander was serving in the Israeli military at the time of his capture on Oct. 7, 2023. He was previously expected to be released last month.

At least 59 hostages still remain in Gaza, only 24 of whom are believed to still be alive. Among the remaining hostages are five Americans, but the other four are presumed dead.
