House panel subpoenas Walz in probe of nonprofit allegedly behind COVID pandemic fraud scheme

The GOP-led House Education and Workforce Committee issued subpoenas Wednesday to Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., Minnesota Commissioner of Education Willie Jett and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack as part of the panel's investigation into a COVID pandmic fraud scheme that dates back to 2022.

Those officials, along with Agriculture Inspector General Phyllis Fong, are being asked to produce documents related to the oversight of the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, which is facing federal criminal charges for allegedly using face children's names to reimburse for meals that were not distributed.

Walz, who is now Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate in the 2024 presidential election, said in July that there wasn't any wrongdoing on the state's part.

"There’s not a single state employee that was implicated in doing anything that was illegal," Walz said, according to a report from The Minnesota Star Tribune. “They simply didn’t do as much due diligence as they should have.”
