House Republicans on Wednesday night released a manager's amendment, which is a package of amendments, to the chamber's reconciliation bill that includes changes to Medicaid, as the party struggles to reach a deal on the legislation.
The new revisions to Medicaid are expected to please conservative hardliners, with the biggest change being expediting the start date of Medicaid work requirements from Jan. 1, 2029, to Dec. 31, 2026.
House Speaker Mike Johnson and his team have been working this past week to reach a deal that satisfies all Republican lawmakers. Certain caucuses have opposed key parts of the legislation, including blue state Republicans who have insisted on a higher SALT deduction cap.
The new manager's amendment also officially includes the SALT deduction cap change, which raises the cap from $30,000 a year to $40,400.
The legislation is currently with the House Rules Committee, which is expected to vote on the legislation late Wednesday evening, or in the early hours of Thursday morning. The committee has been debating the bill all day.
Once the legislation passes the committee, it will head to a final vote on the House floor, where Johnson can only afford to lose three votes.
