House Speaker Johnson heading to Florida to survey Hurricane Helene damage

House Speaker Mike Johnson will go Florida on Thursday to to survey damage from Hurricane Helene and meet with local residents.

Johnson's office confirmed the reported trip to Just the News

The visit is scheduled to take place in Steinhatchee with Florida GOP Reps. Kat Cammack and Neal Dunn.

Johnson's office did not say whether he would be meeting with Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis while in the state.

President Biden is scheduled to visit Tallahassee and Perry, Fla. on Thursday.

Johnson has so far resisted some pressure to call House members back from recess to try to pass additional, emergency funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is leading the recovery effort.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says the agency has enough money for now but not enough should another hurricane hit the U.S.

At least 191 people across the southeast have reportedly died as a result of Helene, which made landfall Sept. 26 in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane.
