House Speaker Johnson reveals his sons almost drowned in ocean after dinner with Trump at Mar-a-Lago

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) revealed in an interview that his sons almost drowned in the ocean following a dinner with former President Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

Johnson's account of the incident appeared in a profile of Johnson published by The Atlantic.

The day after the dinner, Johnson met with donors inside a hotel that was located near the beach. His security detail told the speaker that his sons needed his attention. A parasailer saw the incident unfold.

His son Jake was attempting to help his son Will who was drowning after a riptide pulled them far from the beach. The parasailer alerted a lifeguard who was able to bring them to shore. They needed immediate medical attention and wound up in the emergency room for hours, according to the profile of Johnson.

“President Trump heard about it somehow—miraculously, this never made the news,” Johnson said, per The Atlantic.

Trump and Johnson talked on the phone after the incident, according to The Atlantic.

“He was just so moved by the idea that we almost lost them, and we talked about it at great length,” Johnson continued, per The Atlantic. “And we talked about the faith aspect of that, because he knows that I believe that, you know—that God spared the lives of my sons. That’s how I understand those events, and we talked about that.”

“And he said, he repeated back to me and said, ‘God—God saved your sons’ lives,’” Johnson added.
