Majority of voters says Biden should resign presidency

A telephone survey of U.S. voters revealed that 52% agreed that President Joe Biden should resign the presidency. The same poll found 76% supported Biden dropping out of the race.

The poll, conducted by Rasmussen Reports, polled 1,074 U.S. likely voters by phone from July 22-24, 2024, and has a margin of error of +/- 3%.

Only 18% of respondents disapproved of Biden dropping out of the race. Those opposed to Biden resigning polled at 44%.

The poll also asked for views on the Biden presidency.

"Twenty-two percent (22%) of voters believe Biden will be remembered by most Americans as a great president, and 24% think he will be remembered as a good president," Rasmussen reported. "But 21% say Biden will be remembered as a bad president, and 29% consider him the worst president ever."

Responses on the quality of Biden's presidency fell largely along party lines, with 79% of Democrats believing Biden will be remembered as a great or good president and 52% of Republicans believing he will be remembered as the worst president ever. Only 30% of unaffiliated voters concurred with the Republicans.

However, the poll showed strong bipartisan support for Biden dropping out among Democrats (84%) and Republicans (74%). Independents polled at 72% support.

Results shifted partisan again when pollsters asked about resignation: 73% of Republicans supported resignation, compared to 30% of Democrats and 56% of those with no affiliation.
