A Mexican Navy training vessel struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on Saturday night, injuring several people and triggering a massive emergency response, according to local officials and the Mexican government.
A total of 19 people were injured, including four seriously, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said.
All the injuries were on the ship, and the bridge did not suffer any major damage and was reopened after a structural inspection, Adams said. No victims were thrown into the water, officials said.
New York police and fire departments and the Coast Guard responded "to an incident at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge," the New York City emergency services department said on social media.
The Mexican Navy confirmed the accident in a post on social media.
"During the departure maneuver of the Cuauhtémoc Sailboat in New York, an incident occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge that caused damage to the Training Ship, temporarily preventing the continuation of the training cruise,” it reported on X.
Video on local television showed the Mexican vessel near the base of the bridge and a tugboat trying to assist it.
