Michael Flynn says 'cool heads need to prevail' to de-escalate tensions with Russia

Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn on Friday said there needs to be more communication between the White House and Russia, in order to de-escalate tension between the two countries after Ukraine fired multiple U.S.-made long range missiles into Russian territory this week.

President Joe Biden gave Ukraine the green light to launch U.S.-made missiles into Russia over the weekend, which Russia warned could lead to a third world war. The decision to approve the use of American-made weapons did not appear to be shared with the incoming presidential administration, according to Flynn.

Flynn, who served as President-elect Donald Trump's national security advisor in his first term, said there does not appear to be any communication between Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin on how to move forward.

"This is not a time to point blame. This is a time to be really, really calm and steady and understand what's happening here," Flynn said on the "Just The News, No Noise" TV show. "This is a time when everybody really needs to take a deep breath. Cool heads do need to prevail, and there has to be communications lines opening up diplomatically to slow things down here, otherwise, we're going to go into a very, very dangerous phase of war here."

Flynn said Russia has already demonstrated that it can fire a nuclear capable missile and reminded the public that World War I also began with a regional conflict.

He also said that he does not believe Trump was notified of the escalation prior to the approval from the Biden administration, and that he believes the order was given by people within the administration to disrupt Trump's domestic agenda.

"So I believe, and I'm speaking for myself, that the intention behind the use of these offensive, provocative weapons by Ukraine is designed to upset the Trump domestic agenda, which is a big part of what President Trump got elected on," he said. "We all need ... to get these illegals out of our country, to reduce the crime, to springboard into a administration this time around, unlike what he faced in the 2016-2017 administration."
