New York Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday said she would not be dropping the $464 million civil fraud judgment against President-elect Donald Trump, despite his electoral victory.
An attorney for Trump asked the attorney general to drop the case last month, claiming doing so would be for the "greater good" of the country, and that the judgment would interfere with Trump's ability to perform his duties.
Trump was ordered to pay a combined $464 million, plus interest, earlier this year after Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump and his organization had inflated his net worth in order to get better tax and insurance benefits.
James' office denied the request in a letter to Trump attorney John Sauer, claiming there was no legal basis to vacate the judgment, according to NBC News.
"This Office will not stipulate to vacate the final judgment [against Trump] ... or otherwise seek to dismiss the action," Deputy Solicitor General Judith Vale said in the letter.
"The trial is over, final judgment has been rendered, and defendants’ appeal to the First Department has been fully submitted and argued," she continued. "Mr. Trump’s official duties will not be impeded while awaiting the First Department’s decision."
Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung slammed the decision to keep the civil case going in a statement to NBC.
"AG James should heed President Trump’s call for national unity and drop this baseless, discredited witch hunt," he said.
