Police fatally shoot Maryland man who stabbed brother with spear, brandished weapon at officers

A Maryland man armed with a double-edged spear was fatally shot Monday evening after stabbing his brother with the weapon, then brandishing it at arresting officers.

The incident occurred at about 7:25 p.m. in Maryland's Howard County – between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. – when officers responded to a call from a 26-year-old male who said he was repeatedly stabbed by a family member who had fled the scene, according to police.

Moments later, police received a call from the 23-year-old suspect saying he was armed at a nearby intersection.

Howard County police spokesperson Sherry Llewwllyn told CBS News the yet-to-be identified attacker admitted to the stabbing to the 911 dispatcher.

After refusing to comply with police, then approaching an officer with the large spear, the suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene

No officers were harmed, and the stabbing victim remains in critical condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Police are still investigating the reason for the stabbing.
