Poll shows only a third of Democrats, independents are extremely proud to be Americans

A majority of Republicans are extremely proud to be Americans, while only about one third of Democrats and independents say they are, according to a poll released two days before Independence Day.

The poll was taken by Gallup and the survey results showed that 59% of Republicans said that they are "extremely proud" of their national identity.

Meanwhile, only 34% of Democrats and 36% of Independents said that they were proud to be an American.

American pride was at its highest after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, according to Gallup.

American pride has seemed to decrease over the years, according to polling.

Gallup reported that from 2001 through 2017, "no fewer than 75% of U.S. adults said they were extremely or very proud, including majorities who were extremely proud."
