Speaker Johnson appoints Stefanik to head House Republican Leadership

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday appointed GOP New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as chairwoman of the House Republican Leadership for the 119th Congress.

Stefanik will be responsible for helping the House deliver President Donald Trump's agenda over the next two years, which includes the closely watched budget resolution

The lawmaker will also serve as a member of the Steering Committee, and will retain her positions as a senior member of the Armed Services committee and the Education and the Workforce Committee.

“I am honored to be appointed Chairwoman of House Republican Leadership to lead House Republicans in implementing President Donald Trump's mandate from the American people for an America First agenda that includes securing our borders, strengthening our national security, growing our economy, and combating the scourge of antisemitism across our country,” Stefanik said in a statement. "I look forward to the work ahead in enacting President Trump’s historic agenda.”

Stefanik was previously expected to be confirmed as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, but her nomination was pulled to keep the House from losing another conservative lawmaker. It had already lost several to Trump's new administration.
