New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik appeared on Wednesday to be feuding with her state's Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, amid speculation she will challenge the incumbent next year for the state's gubernatorial seat.
Stefanik, who was previously nominated for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, slammed Hochul in several social media posts, stating a recent poll shows how vulnerable the governor really is in New York.
The lawmaker was referring to a Marist poll that showed Hochul with a 39% approval rating, with the majority also responding that they did not want her to seek reelection next year.
"This latest bombshell polling proves what every New Yorker already knows: that we must FIRE Kathy Hochul in 2026 to SAVE NEW YORK," Stefanik posted to X.
"Her incompetence, corruption, and radical failed Far Left policies have destroyed our great state causing businesses and families to flee from crushing high taxes, out of control regulations, inept fiscal mismanagement, wide open border sanctuary city policies putting illegals first and NYers last, and an out of control crime crisis due to Democrats’ failed bail reform defund the police policies," she added.
Hochul downplayed the threat Stefanik, a rising star in GOP politics, posed if she were to challenge the incumbent, stating she heard from voters in the Republican's district that they're looking for someone to stand up to President Donald Trump.
“No matter who the G.O.P. nominee is next year that I will be running against, it will be an extreme MAGA Republican, and I look forward to that fight,” Hochul said, according to the New York Times.
Stefanik responded to the statement in another post on X, appearing to mock the governor's approval ratings in her district, which the Republican stated was the "worst in the state."
"North Country voters will not forget her attempt to disenfranchise and rob them of their voice and vote," Stefanik insisted. "They will not forget what she did to our farmers ... Oh and one more thing … even Democrat candidates in the North Country refuse to publicly support her. Just ask them!"
Stefanik has not definitively stated whether she intends to seek the state's top office next year.
