The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on Thursday in favor of South Carolina Republicans, finding that legislators had not conducted a racial gerrymander of the district.

"The circumstantial evidence falls far short of showing that race, not partisan preferences, drove the districting process," Associate Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority, NBC News reported.

The First Congressional District at issue includes much of the state's southern coastal territory and is currently represented by GOP Rep. Nancy Mace, who first won election in 2020.

In March of this year, a lower court permitted the state's district lines to remain in effect for the 2024 elections, citing the impracticality of adopting alternative maps in time for the contests.

The ruling is a key win for Republicans, who currently maintain a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
