Acting International Revenue Service Commissioner Melanie Krause has resigned following a Trump administration agreement in which the agency will share taxpayer information with Department of Homeland Security officials to help them track down illegal migrants.
Krause informed her staff on Tuesday that she was leaving, according to CNN.
The first commissioner to recently leave was Danny Wurful, a Biden administration appointee. He resigned Jan. 20, the day President Trump took office. The next was Douglas O'Donnell, who was appointed to serve as acting commissioner shortly after Wurful resigned. O'Donnell, a career IRS official, announced his retirement Feb. 26.
Krause, formerly the IRS's chief operating officer, was appointed to the acting post by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
A source told the news outlet the IRS-DHS agreement was just one reason Krause was leaving.
Other purported reasons include the exodus of senior IRS officials and Krause not liking the direction in which the agency was going.
“Melanie Krause has been leading the IRS through a time of extraordinary change," a Treasury Department spokesperson said in a statement. "As we focus on IT modernization and re-organize the agency to better serve the taxpayer, we are also in the midst of breaking down data silos that for too long have stood in the way of identifying waste, fraud, and abuse and bringing criminals to justice."
