Top Israeli generals favor ceasefire while Netanyahu opposes leaving Hamas in power: Report

Israel’s top generals are in favor of moving forward with a ceasefire in Gaza to have the best chance of freeing Israeli hostages even if it allows Hamas to stay in power temporarily, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes that strategy, according to a new report.

There are about 120 Israelis being held as hostages in Gaza.

Netanyahu is against a truce in Gaza at this time, in part, because it would not defeat Hamas.

Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, has said it will continue to carry out strikes in northern Israel until the war in Gaza comes to a close.

A New York Times report said that a truce with Hamas could make it easier to reach an agreement with Hezbollah, citing the current thinking of Israeli officials who spoke under the condition of anonymity.
