Trump administration looking for other countries to take deportees

The Trump administration is looking for other countries to take people deported from the U.S., Secretary of State Marco Rubio says.

Part of the administration's mass deportation program includes expanding its use of foreign prisons, Rubio said Wednesday at a Cabinet meeting, according to Politico.

“Not just El Salvador,” he said. “We are working with other countries to say, ‘We want to send you some of the most despicable human beings to your countries.’”

The secretary of state didn't explain why the U.S. is looking to use foreign prisons or which countries were being considered, but he said, “[T]he further away from America, the better.”

In March, President Trump used the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport about 240 men from Venezuela allegedly part of the Tren de Aragua gang to a prison in El Salvador. The administration said the men were sent to El Salvador because Venezuela wasn't accepting them back.

“I’m not apologetic about it,” Rubio said. “We are doing that. The president was elected to keep America safe and to get rid of a bunch of perverts and pedophiles and child rapists out of our country.”
