Trump team declares victory after judge cancels sentencing

President-elect Donald Trump's team is declaring victory after Judge Juan Merchan cancelled his sentencing in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's hush money case.

“This is a total and definitive victory for President Trump and the American People who elected him in a landslide," said Steven Cheung, Trump's campaign communications director, who is set to take up the same role in the White House. "The Manhattan DA has conceded that this Witch Hunt cannot continue. The lawless case is now stayed, and President Trump’s legal team is moving to get it dismissed once and for all.”

Trump was convicted earlier this year on 34 counts of falsifying business records in relation to a payment his then-personal attorney, Michael Cohen, made to Stormy Daniels. His sentencing was set for Nov. 26, but Merchan adjourned without explanation on Tuesday.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and Merchan is still weighing whether to toss the conviction outright. The cancellation of the sentencing date is not a decision on the merits of the case or Trump's bid to have the charges tossed, but appears to signal that the president-elect will not face prison time prior to his inauguration.
