President Donald Trump teased that he was preparing a move to withdraw federal funding for sanctuary jurisdictions that refused to cooperate with immigration enforcement efforts.
"No more Sanctuary Cities! They protect the Criminals, not the Victims. They are disgracing our Country, and are being mocked all over the World. Working on papers to withhold all Federal Funding for any City or State that allows these Death Traps to exist!!!" he posted on Truth Social.
Attorney General Pam Bondi previously issued a pause on federal funding in February and it is unclear how Trump's "papers" will build on that move. Nevertheless, sanctuary states and cities are overwhelmingly led by Democrats and these jurisdictions have been in the crosshairs of the Republicans since the campaign.
Deportations have lagged under the Trump administration, despite his pledge to remove as many as 21 million illegal immigrants under his tenure. The House, however, on Thursday approved a budget blueprint that could lead to federal immigration authorities receiving considerable funding to expand their operations.
