Trump touts 'Big win' in wake of Supreme Court immunity ruling

Former President Donald Trump on Monday applauded a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court that found he enjoyed presidential immunity for official acts amid a case from special counsel Jack Smith over the Jan. 6 incident.

"BIG WIN FOR OUR CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY. PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!" he posted on Truth Social in the wake of the ruling.

The court determined 6-3 that presidents enjoy immunity for official acts, but not for unofficial acts.

"Under our constitutional structure of separated powers, the nature of Presidential power entitles a former President to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority," wrote Chief Justice John Roberts. "And he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts."

The immediate implications of the ruling for Smith's charges are unclear. Smith has brought four charges against Trump in the D.C. election case.
