US diplomats ordered to leave Iraq over unspecified threats: Report

The United States has ordered all of its diplomats in Baghdad, Iraq to leave their embassy due to unspecified security threats, Politico reported on Wednesday.

The ordered departure, which is also in effect for diplomats stationed in Erbil, Iraq, comes after Iran's defense minister threatened to strike American bases in the area if negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program are not successful.

The State Department did not specify what threat the order is in response to, but it applies to all nonessential personnel in Iraq. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is also allowing U.S. military dependents to leave the Middle East voluntarily.

“President [Donald] Trump is committed to keeping Americans safe, both at home and abroad. In keeping with that commitment, we are constantly assessing the appropriate personnel posture at all our embassies," the State Department told the outlet. "Based on our latest analysis, we decided to reduce the footprint of our mission in Iraq."

Trump has pushed Iran to permanently give up its work toward developing a nuclear weapon as it continues enriching its uranium. But Trump on Monday said the two countries, which have engaged in five rounds of nuclear talks so far, are still far from reaching a deal.

Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet with Iranian officials this weekend for the sixth round of negotiations.
