Youngkin to propose statewide ban on 'sanctuary cities' in Virginia

Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin is expected to introduce a budget proposal on Thursday that would include a ban on "sanctuary cities," and state funding for cities that do not comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Mayors of self-proclaimed "sanctuary cities" across the United States have already teased that they will not comply with the incoming Trump administration's efforts to deport massive amounts of illegal immigrants.

The proposal is expected to force local police and corrections officers to fulfill detainer requests for criminal illegal immigrants, and to notify the federal government within two days that it has released one, according to Fox News. In addition, the state will withhold money for police departments in cities that identify as a "sanctuary city" or create similar policies.

"Criminals who are in the United States illegally will be turned over to ICE," Youngkin told the outlet. "We must stop the cycle of violence and crime that is being enabled by some local governments. Virginia is not a sanctuary state, and we must be clear that we will not allow localities to become ‘sanctuary cities.'"

The proposal comes amid a slew of violent crimes in the state that were allegedly committed at the hands of illegal immigrants, including allegations that Honduran national Denis Humberto Navarette-Romero raped a woman on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail last month.

The suspect will have a preliminary hearing in March of 2025, according to the Fairfax County outlet FFX Now.
