The area of Alum Rock in Birmingham where “no whites” graffiti was spray painted on a school is 93.6% non-white, according to the latest census.
Police said they were investigating the racist graffiti after CCTV footage captured a hooded man spraying the message onto a primary school at 1:20am on Thursday morning last week.
The message, as well as another version that says, “no whites allowed,” has appeared at three different locations in the inner-city Alum Rock neighbourhood.
According to the 2021 census, the population of Alum Rock, located in England’s second largest city, is 93.6% non-white, with just 1,798 white people living there compared to 21,065 Asians and 2871 blacks.
Naveed Sadiq, 48, a community activist known as the Bearded Beys, claimed in an interview with the Telegraph that the culprit was an outsider who was trying to stir up racial tension.
“A lot of people from the community are saying that this is someone from the outside, this is not someone from the community. It’s awful. We are a community that invites everyone. It is what the purpose of coming to the United Kingdom is, living side by side and respecting one another,” said.
“I can’t see anybody from our community doing that [the graffiti]. People want to give us bad press. People want to say we are unwelcoming,” added Sadiq.
However, there was a similar incident in the area back in 2017, when the words, “No whites allowed after 8pm” appeared, suggesting the sentiment may be widespread.
The recent graffiti appeared about a mile away from the area where mobs of young Muslim men engaged in violent disorder in response to the riots after they falsely believed speculation that a “far-right march” was set to take place.
The mob besieged a pub and violently attacked a white man who made the mistake of exiting the building.
