Biden Holding Snap Crisis Meeting With Democratic Governors
The White House has announced that Joe Biden is to take part in a closed doors meeting with Democratic governors Wednesday evening in an effort to convince them that he is capable of continuing as the Party nominee.
CBS news reported on the development, noting that the meeting has been called “to shore up support for him after last week’s shaky debate performance.”
“Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the chair of the Democratic Governors Association, will be at the White House for the meeting. Some governors plan to attend in person, while others will attend virtually,” the report continues.
It adds that “Members of the Democratic Governors’ Association held a call Monday to discuss the ongoing response to last week’s debate and a widespread concern among the state chief executives that Mr. Biden has done little outreach to governors.”
The report also notes that the Governors want to hear directly from Biden, rather than Kamala Harris, who was originally slated to speak to them.
“They’d like to hear from him directly before going and sticking out their necks for him again,” one inside source told CBS News.
California governor Gavin Newsom, who has been widely touted as a replacement for Biden is flying to DC in order to attend the meeting.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, also cited as a possible replacement candidate, will also attend in person.
The news of the meeting also comes on the heels of reports that Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota held a conference call with the Democratic Governors Association to discuss their concerns about Biden.
No Biden staffers or White House aides were privy to the conversation, CNN notes, explaining “The governors, one of the sources said, were worried about going public with their concerns out of fear that it would lead to Biden digging in further.”
The source also stated that “Biden’s advisers are also discussing the possibility of having the president travel to Wisconsin on Friday and Pennsylvania on Sunday.”
As we highlighted earlier, Reuters is reporting that at least 25 Congressional Democrats are to officially call on Biden to drop out as nominee.
