Pharrell Williams Says He’s “Annoyed” With Celebrities Constantly Telling People Who to Vote For
Music producer Pharrell Williams says he is “annoyed” with celebrities constantly inserting themselves into politics and telling people who to vote for.
“I don’t do politics. In fact, I get annoyed sometimes when I see celebrities trying to tell you [who to vote for],” Williams said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“There are celebrities that I respect that have an opinion, but not all of them,” he added. “I’m one of them people [who says], ‘What the heck? Shut up. Nobody asked you.'”
The hip-hop star made the comments in response to being asked if he would allow political campaigns to use his music.
“When people get out there and get self-righteous and they roll up their sleeves and shit, and they are out there walking around with a placard: ‘Shut up!’ So, no, I would rather stay out of the way, and obviously, I’m going to vote how I’m going to vote. I care about my people and I care about the country, but I feel there’s a lot of work that needs to be done, and I’m really about the action,” he said.
Williams made the comments after pop star Taylor Swift, who has basically been turned into a modern day deity by the entertainment industry and the media, endorsed Kamala Harris following last week’s presidential debate.
Ironically, some speculated that we’ve reached the stage where celebrities merely acting in a non-partisan way is a de facto endorsement of Trump.
Earlier this month, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had some kind words for Donald Trump when he told attendees at The Value Conference in Florida that Trump bravely standing up after the first assassination attempt against him was what the country “wanted to see.”
“Whether you love Donald, don’t love Donald, it doesn’t matter. They tried to assassinate him. There’s no room for that. Despite it being who we were in that moment, I still believe in my core that is not who we are as a country. So him standing up at that moment, we wanted to see that,” Johnson said.
The actor previously said he would not be making an official endorsement in 2024, with some suggesting Johnson now regrets endorsing Joe Biden in 2020.
