Tony Blair Admits Mass Migration Has Placed “Strain” on Communities

Understatement of the century.

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has admitted that mass migration, which began to soar during his premiership, has caused “strain” on communities across the country.

During Blair’s time in office, net migration to the UK went from around 50,000 per year to 250,000 per annum.

Under the Tories, who promised to reduce net migration back down to the tens of thousands, it skyrocketed to 764,000 by December 2022.

Now one in 30 people living in the UK arrived in the last two years alone.

During an interview with the BBC, Blair claimed that his decision to open the borders, done to “rub the right’s nose in diversity,” helped the economy.

As we recently highlighted, that argument is no longer valid given that almost 1.7 million foreigners residing in the UK are out of work or “economically inactive,” costing taxpayers an estimated £8.5 billion per year.

However, Blair conceded that his policy had come at a cost.

“If I’d still been in power and I’d notice, because this is true in certain communities, there was a big influx of people, it was causing real strains in some of those communities,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s the biggest problem on immigration, but I agree it was a problem. If I’d still been in power, I would have been all over it,” Blair added.

A clip from the interview features Blair explaining how instead of reducing immigration, the Tories’ botched Brexit by swapping European migrants for even larger numbers of migrants from Asia and Africa.

“We’ve swapped out single people coming from Europe … for families from Asia and Africa. How has this helped us?” he asked.

While Blair’s description that the influx of migrants has caused “strain” is the understatement of the century, he at least goes further than most leftists, who refuse to even acknowledge the negative consequences of mass immigration.

Indeed, the woke mantra that “diversity is our greatest strength” can only really be maintained at this point by demonizing those who question it as racist extremists.

As we previously highlighted, a peer reviewed study by Danish academics in 2019 found that ethnic diversity has a negative impact on communities because it erodes trust.

Seeking to answer whether “continued immigration and corresponding growing ethnic diversity” was having a positive impact on community cohesion, the study found the opposite to be the case.

Studying existing literature and also carrying out a meta-analysis of 1,001 estimates from 87 studies, the researchers concluded, “We find a statistically significant negative relationship between ethnic diversity and social trust across all studies.”
