Trump: France Banning Le Pen From Running “Sounds Very Much Like This Country”

“That’s a very big deal. I know all about it”

President Trump remarked Monday that the banning of the “leading candidate” in France’s 2027 election sounds a lot like what Democrats attempted to do to him.

France’s populist candidate Marine Le Pen and 20 other National Rally party members, were handed a five-year ban from politics, with Le Pen sentenced to four years in prison, with two suspended, on charges of embezzlement of EU funds.

A French court ruled that Le Pen misused 4.4 million euros allocated to pay assistants to lawmakers in the European Parliament for labor.

The court ruled that Le Pen and her Party members used the money illegally to instead pay staffers who were not sanctioned to carry out parliament work.

Le Pen and her supporters are calling it a trumped up bureaucratic charge.

When asked about Le Pen’s conviction and ban, Trump told reporters, “that’s a big deal. That’s a very big deal. I know all about it.”

“A lot of people thought she wasn’t going to be convicted of anything,” he continued, adding “She was banned from running for five years and she was the leading candidate. That sounds like this country. That sounds very much like this country.”

Watch:

Le Pen will appeal the ruling and if upheld, her sentence will not begin until the appeal process has concluded.

Conservatives have charged that the development is part of a trend of going after populist leaders with lawfare to prevent them from being elected.
