Weird Blood Red Official Portrait Of King Charles III Looks Like He's Burning In Hell
An official portrait of King Charles III unveiled Tuesday has people wondering why the monarch looks like he's in hell in the painting.
The British monarch was rendered in oil by artist Jonathan Yeo against a background of ‘vivid red hues’ which Yeo states are inspired by the uniform of the Welsh Guards military unit of which Charles has been Regimental Colonel since 1975.
Charles is grasping a sword, and above his right shoulder there is a Monarch butterfly, which was Charles' idea, according to the artist.
“In history of art, the butterfly symbolises metamorphosis and rebirth,” Yeo noted.
“I said, when schoolchildren are looking at this in 200 years and they're looking at the who's who of the monarchs, what clues can you give them?” Yeo stated, adding “He said 'what about a butterfly landing on my shoulder?'”
Presumably he didn't say “in hell” though.
Yeo further stated “My aim was also to make reference to the traditions of Royal portraiture but in a way that reflects a 21st Century Monarchy and, above all else, to communicate the subject’s deep humanity.”
“It is remarkable actually how it has turned out,” Charles was heard commenting during the unveiling.
Yeo quipped “If this was seen as treasonous, I could literally pay for it with my head, which would be an appropriate way for a portrait painter to die – to have their head removed!”
The portrait was commissioned in 2020, before Charles became the King. Why it took four whole years to complete is anyone's guess.
In a further video explaining the painting Yeo noted that “there will always be people who disagree with you, people that don’t agree with how you’ve done it.”
Right, cue the reactions, from the funny to the downright bizarre:
