A woman was beaten and raped by a Bulgarian-Turkish suspect for refusing to swear on the Quran that she was not cheating. In a previous incident, he also beat the victim with a baseball bat that had a nail embedded inside it.
The 24-year-old suspect, Ilia K., who came to Germany as a refugee in 2015, is standing trial in the Frankfurt Regional Court for the previous incidents. He has been charged with rape, bodily harm, and other violations.
His 19-year-old ex-girlfriend, Yildiz G., whose name has been changed to protect her identity, had already separated from the suspect in 2023 because he had beaten her with a baseball bat. He allegedly assaulted her at that time due to jealousy, and was sentenced to ten months of probation.
They both lived in the troubled high-crime neighborhood of Nordweststadt in the city of Frankfurt, which features a number of high-rise buildings.
Ilia K. continued to stalk and harass the woman, according to Bild newspaper.
“He had repeatedly threatened to kill and stab the victim and also threatened family members,” said public prosecutor Luisa Mende. He was also issued with a restraining order against the victim.
Prosecutors say that on June 25, 2024, Ilia K. lured the victim to a park where he confronted her.
“He asked her to place her hand on the Quran and swear that she hadn’t cheated on him,” said the prosecutor in court.
However, Yildiz refused, saying she had her period and was not permitted to swear on the Quran during that time.
He then threatened her with death and proceeded to beat her, including pulling her hair and kicking her. Afterwards, he dragged her into a bush and then raped her.
The victim alleges that he told her, “I will kill you with five stabs, one in your a**hole, one in your pu**y, and three in your breasts, as reported by the women’s group Lucreta.
He told his victim he would rape her again and film the rape in order for all of Frankfurt to see it.
In the courtroom, Bild newspaper described Ilia K. as “impassive” as the charges were read out. Photos of the woman’s severely bruised and battered face were also shown to the court.
“Today, he is to remain silent; he will not make any submissions, neither about the crime nor about his personal circumstances,” said the suspect’s attorney, Ivo Hänel.
After the day of trial, he requested to kiss and hug his mother, but the court refused his request. The family of the victim also claims the father of the suspect made two death threats preceding the trial over the phone.
