The survey was conducted on more than 12,000 Americans aged 18 and older. Gallup asked respondents whether they identify as heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or something else.
The survey found that the number of adults who identify as something other than heterosexual has risen from 3.5 percent in 2012 to 7.6 percent today. (Related: Four in 10 Brown University students claim they’re LGBTQ, confirming massive leftist social contagion and brainwashing.)
Among all the LGBTQ+ identifications, bisexuality appears as the predominant LGBTQ+ status among Gen Z (born 1997 and after), millennials (1981 to 1996) and Gen X (1965 to 1988).
Based on the survey, bisexual adults account for 4.4 percent of adults in the United States and 57.3 percent of the entire adult LGBTQ+ population.
Following closely behind are gays and lesbians, each representing slightly over one percent. Transgender individuals make up slightly less than one percent, comprising about one in eight of all LGBTQ+ adults.
Additionally, the most commonly volunteered other LGBTQ+ identities are pansexual – sexual attraction to people regardless of sex or gender identity – and asexual – a lack of sexual attraction. Both pansexual and asexual LGBTQ+ identities were mentioned by less than two percent of LGBTQ+ adults, each.

The survey also reveals that 28.5 percent of Gen Z women identified with an LGBTQ+ identity – 20.7 percent bisexual, 5.4 percent lesbian and 2.1 percent transgender and 0.3 percent other. Among Gen Z men, 10.6 percent identified as LGBTQ+ – 6.9 percent bisexual and 2.8 percent gay.
Comparatively, the survey shows that only 5.4 percent of millennial men and 12.4 percent of millennial women identified as LGBTQ+. Meanwhile, older Americans were more likely to identify as gay or lesbian rather than bisexual or transgender.
The survey also highlighted the growing number of American individuals who identified as nonbinary – or identifying with a gender being neither male nor female. Precise estimates of the number of LGBTQ+ Americans who are nonbinary for 2023 are unavailable. But combined data from 2023 and previous years estimates that approximately 80 percent of nonbinary adults identify as LGBTQ+, with around one-third of them identifying as bisexual and another one-third as transgender.
Proportion of adults identifying as LGBTQ+ to exceed 10% in next three decades
If current trends persist, the proportion of LGBTQ+ adults in the U.S. is projected to exceed 10 percent within the next three decades.
Brandon Robinson, an associate professor and department chair of gender and sexuality studies at the University of California, Riverside, explained the growing numbers as indicative of greater societal acceptance and support systems for those identifying as LGBTQ+.
"More people identifying as LGBTQ is often a sign that more people feel safe and/or comfortable to openly claim an LGBTQ identity," he said.
Pamela Lannutti, the director of the Center for Human Sexuality Studies at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, echoes the sentiment.
"It gives me hope that our policies will become even more positive toward LGBTQ+ people, but it is also important to keep in mind that experiences of discrimination and rejection will vary greatly depending on specific life contexts," Lannutti said.
