Big Tech- and Soros-Funded Institution Aims for More Censorship

The Brookings Institution, an entity substantially funded by Big Tech and leftist billionaire George Soros, is whining for increased censorship in the wake of the 2024 election.

On Nov. 7, Brookings senior fellow Darrell West asserted Republicans won the 2024 election due to insufficient censorship of so-called online disinformation. Disturbingly, Brookings has financial ties to multiple Big Tech platforms that can censor speech online.

Brookings’ new commentary complained about President-elect Donald Trump and Republicans’ 2024 landslide victory, which reclaimed the House and Senate. Brookings highlighted “inflation fears, concerns about border security, worries about cultural issues related to race, gender, and sexuality, and feelings that President Joe Biden and the country as a whole were headed in the wrong direction,” but ultimately blamed alleged “disinformation.”

Every single example Brookings cited of supposed “disinformation” was exclusively from the Republican side, including Trump’s reaction to reports of Haitian migrants cooking pets. Other examples were allegations of sexual abuse against Democrat vice presidential nominee Tim Walz and an AI-generated image of Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Brookings tellingly did not label Democrat propaganda as disinformation. The commentary piece defended outgoing President Joe Biden’s record and that of other Democrat candidates, including Walz.

Brookings also did not list the times accurate information was censored in the past with the excuse of suppressing “disinformation.” Infamously, the Hunter Biden laptop story was crushed onlineswinging the 2020 election in Joe Biden’s favor. Arguments that the Covid-19 virus originated in a Wuhan lab and reports of out-of-control border crossings/trafficking under Biden both turned out to be credible, but were suppressed. Then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson, gun enthusiast Mike Yardley and Project Veritas were all users censored for one of these two topics, as MRC’s CensorTrackdatabase shows.

“The disinformation risks have grown stronger in recent months due to new tech tools such as generative AI,” Brookings warned. “If that continues, it will lead to disaster for our country’s politics and governance.” It demanded that digital platforms and websites “get a serious handle on the flood of disinformation.”

Notably, Brookings’ 2023 annual report listed multiple Big Tech companies as donors in various categories by the size of the donation, namely Microsoft ($2 million+), Meta ($250,000+), and Google (both the $500,000+ and $250,000+ categories). Meanwhile, George Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF) awarded Brookings 11 grants from 2016 to 2023, totaling over $2.9 million. MRC studies have repeatedly demonstrated Google’s bias, including a Nov. 7 study illustrating egregious left-leaning 2024 election manipulation.

Conservatives are under attack. Contact your representatives and demand that Big Tech be held to account to mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency, clarity on “hate speech” and equal footing for conservatives. If you have been censored, contact us using CensorTrack’s contact form, and help us hold Big Tech accountable.
