Google Quietly Thwarting Trump Nominees with Leftist Results for Fourth Straight Week

Google stacked search results for Trump nominees with legacy and leftist media sources for the fourth straight week. In fact, the search giant went above and beyond to push outlets that encourage hatred of several of President-elect Donald Trump’s choices.

The Media Research Center discovered Tuesday that Google had once again rigged its general search and news tab results filling them with media sources hostile to Trump and the people he has nominated to serve in his administration. Leftist and legacy media articles greatly outnumbered articles from news outlets considered “right” or “lean right” by media ratings firm AllSides. After comparing the search results to the AllSides media bias list, MRC researchers found eight times more left-leaning articles in the general search results than U.S.-based “lean right” or “right” articles. Google similarly supplied nearly six times as many left-leaning articles for its news tab search.

Google provided scarcely any articles categorized as “lean right” or “right” by AllSides to go along with these vicious attacks and this stacked deck of leftist and legacy media. For the news tab search results, Google provided 176 left-leaning articles compared to only 31 U.S.-based “lean right” or “right” articles. The general search results included a paltry 12 “lean right” or “right” articles, badly outnumbered by the 96 leftist articles in the results. Furthermore, Google failed to show a single U.S.-based “lean right” or “right” article for over 65 percent of nominees that the search giant provided articles for in general search.

Google truly distinguished itself by pushing outlets that stoke hatred against nominees like Kash Patel, Trump’s FBI director nominee. Google filled Patel’s general search results with attacks and elevated a fearmongering Slate article with the headline “We’ve Seen Kash Patel’s Enemies List. It’s Terrifying” at the top of the page. Other articles by leftist outlets such as NPR, CNN, The GuardianThe Daily Mail and NBC News spread fear about Patel.

In the news tab search result for “Kash Patel,” Google included the Slate article second from the top, while also elevating a Mother Jones article calling Patel a “useful idiot for Putin,” a CNN article implying Patel was paranoid and an NPR article accusing him of feeding “conspiracy theories” to children.

Meanwhile, Americans using Google’s news tab to search “Linda McMahon,” Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Education, on Dec. 10 would have encountered the words “News about sexual abuse” at the top of the page above all the results. From there, Google included seven stories in a row about sexual abuse accusations before a Letter to the Editor from The Columbus Dispatch headlined “Donald Trump pick Linda McMahon can be stopped before she wreaks havoc on education.”

A Google news tab search for “Russell Vought,” Trump’s chosen Office of Management and Budget director, also featured a host of slanted articles, including fearmongering from leftist attack dog ProPublica. Google pushed a negative blog by Truthout, a radical leftist publication, to the top of the news tab results for Vought. Truthout pitches visitors to its website with a ridiculous anti-Trump pop-up cash grab: “One of the sharpest weapons against fascism … is journalism that tells the truth. To resist Trump in 2025, we’re appealing to our readers to add 1500 new monthly donors before December 31. Your donation is a tangible act of resistance.”

Google’s choice to stuff the results with these radical leftist attacks and legacy media sources produced extremely lopsided results. This is despite the fact that MRC researchers twice counted the Kamala Harris cheerleaders at The Bulwark, as “lean right” due to AllSides choice to rate the outlet this way.

Yes, the NeverTrump Bulwark was repeatedly featured by Google. Despite only providing 31 “lean right” or “right articles” in its news tab search, Google still twice found space for this publication that repeatedly pushed people to support the election of the most radical Democratic nominee in history and is filled with rabidly anti-Trump writers who embrace leftist positions on transgenderism, abortion, immigration, the fight against DEI and other issues.

Yet even with this obvious left-wing, anti-Trump publication counted as “lean right,” the numbers still show screaming leftist bias from Google.

Methodology

For this report, MRC Free Speech America analyzed the Dec. 10 Google Search and News tab results for the first and last names of twenty men and women nominated for cabinet-level positions in the second Trump administration as well as Trump’s choice for FCC chairman and Trump’s choice for FBI director. MRC Free Speech America created an algorithm to automate this process in a clean environment. A “clean environment” allows for organic search to populate results without the influence of prior search history and tracking cookies. MRC Free Speech America also utilized the AllSides media bias chart as a gauge to determine which outlets are “right” and “lean right.” AllSides notes it has a “patent on rating bias and use[s] multiple methodologies,” not a homogenous group or an algorithm. “Our methods are: Blind Bias Surveys of AmericansEditorial Reviews by a multipartisan team of panelists who look for common types of media bias, independent reviews, and third-party data.”

Readers should be aware that this report only uses the AllSides list to analyze ratings of outlets considered by AllSides to be “right” and “lean right” and does not necessarily reflect MRC’s characterizations of these outlets.

Nominees searched on December 10 include Brendan Carr, Brooke Rollins, Christopher Wright, Doug Collins, Douglas Burgum, Elise Stefanik, Howard Lutnick, Jamieson Greer, Kash Patel, Kelly Loeffler, Kevin Hassett, Kristi Noem, Lee Zeldin, Linda McMahon, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Marco Rubio, Pamela Bondi, Peter Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Russell Vought, Scott Bessent, Scott Turner, Sean Duffy, Susan Wiles and Tulsi Gabbard.
