African immigrants voiced complaints about their living conditions during a Tuesday city council meeting in New York City, sparking backlash from U.S. citizens.
The meeting, which made headlines on Tuesday after over 1,000 illegal immigrants swarmed City Hall, was intended to make the experience for illegals “even better” than it already is.
It also featured a segment titled “The Experiences of Black Migrants in New York City.”
Only a select number of African immigrants were inside City Hall, and some complained about the food they were being given and having to leave their accommodations after a set period.
The Post Millennial reports that one woman, speaking through an interpreter, told the Committees on Immigration and Hospitals that her children “cannot eat the food at the shelter.” Adding that during Ramadan they “couldn’t eat because when you come back for the breaks the food is no good at all.”
“And they give us two months to stay at the shelter and then you have to go out again with your luggage and your kids and find another place,” she continued. “It’s very difficult.”
The woman also complained that her child who is over 18 doesn’t have schooling.
“We're so sorry that American food is not to your liking,” wrote one angry user on X following the story. “Please accept our humble apologies. A plane will be waiting to take you all back to Africa.”
FOX 5 reported the migrants in attendance at the meeting were mainly French-speaking natives of Africa and Haiti. Their primary reason for gathering was to demand “assistance and the ability to work.”
Some testified that because many who are entering the city do not speak English, are illiterate, and are unable to understand written communications about their rights as asylum-seekers, New York City, which is a sanctuary city, should “do better.”
One witness wearing Africa-shaped earrings said, “In the Congo you have like more than 500 languages”
“We need people that speak the native language to teach to those people,” she added. “That’s what we’re asking the city and the city refuses. There is no excuse.”
Other witnesses urged the city to offer “mental health services” and workforce training for migrants, per FOX 5. There was discussion on the most effective strategies to ensure migrants receive vaccinations.
“Can’t wrap my head around the entitlement of these illegals. They come from third-world hell holes. And I can’t wrap my head around people in NY voting for this,” wrote an account by the name Hockey mom on Tuesday.
Paul A. Szypula replied to her comment, writing, “The illegals have no respect for law and are greedy.”
“The people in NY who voted for this didn’t think the reality of illegals would ever end up where they live and work,” he added.
