Videos advertising drag camps for kids are circulating social media again just ahead of summer with critics calling out organizers for their out in the open, public “groomer” behavior.
X user Michael Oxford highlighted one video in particular on Tuesday, pointing to the bizarre Young Actors Theater Camp in Santa Cruz County.
In the video a man in drag boasts about his past accomplishments, and that he will be teaching “camp drag.” He then points viewers to check out the camp’s website to register for the “truly fabulous experience,” adding that spots and scholarships are available.
The website says that children 8-18 are invited. In its 2022-23 brochure, the camp says it offers a “safe and supportive environment for students of all ages and experience levels to cultivate and explore a life in the performing arts.”
One of the listed activities includes RuPaul's Drag Race Show where cosplay is encouraged.
Another spotlight item is private coaching, where the event talks about its “amazing coaches” available for in-person and skype sessions.
Oxford shared the video, writing, “It would be very interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes at this camp.”
Oxford talked about this theater camp last year too, writing about its “drag show for kids.”
“I’m not sure if this one was an overnight event like the last one,” he added. “It’s is a camp for 8-18 year olds BTW. I’m super suspicious of this place. All these pictures are posted on their IG.”
Critics have also taken notice of other camps springing up across the nation and abroad. With the backlash hitting its peak one year ago.
Ian Miles Cheong drew attention to Carousel Theatre For Young People back in March 2023. He noted that the Trudeau government in Canada was “sponsoring” the summer camp for “for children ages 7 to 11 to become drag queens.”
Billboard Chris brought this particular camp up also to urge his followers to take notice of who was specifically sponsoring it, including: City of Vancouver, Canada Council for the Arts, British Columbia Arts Council, Government of British Columbia, Granville Island, Government of Canada.
“Every taxpayer-funded government entity is pushing queer theory on our kids,” he wrote.
The popular account Libs Of TikTok has been vocal on the topic in the past, saying, “Imagine sending your kid to LGBTQ drag summer camp where they’re groomed into becoming youth drag queens by staff who are drag queens.”
The account has also bolstered, “Why would any adult want to teach young kids to crossdress and dance provocatively for cash?”
