Former White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain raised significant questions about President Joe Biden's political approach. Highlighting concerns that the administration may be too focused on the “f***ing bridge” at the expense of immediate economic needs as Biden gears up for potential reelection.

Klain's remarks were reportedly captured during a discussion on April 4 at a “Democracy: A Journal of Ideas” event. They shed light on his critique of the White House communication strategy.

Klain expressed pride in Biden's achievements, however, he underscored his reservations regarding the administration's emphasis on infrastructure initiatives over more pressing economic concerns.

“I think the president is out there too much talking about bridges,” Klain asserted, according to audio obtained exclusively by POLITICO.

“He does two or three events a week where he’s cutting a ribbon on a bridge,” he continued. “And here’s a bridge. Like I tell you, if you go into the grocery store, you go to the grocery store and, you know, eggs and milk are expensive, the fact that there’s a f***ing bridge is not [inaudible].”

Klain emphasized the importance of showcasing the administration's infrastructure projects but expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of this strategy.

“He’s not a congressman. He’s not running for Congress,” Klain remarked. “I think it’s kind of a fool’s errand. I think that [it] also doesn’t get covered that much because, look, it’s a f***ing bridge. Like it’s a bridge, and how interesting is the bridge? It’s a little interesting but it’s not a lot interesting.”

Klain reiterated his pride in Biden's accomplishments but maintained his critique of the administration's messaging strategy in a subsequent interview.

He stressed the need for Biden and his campaign to shift the focus of the election towards a debate about the future rather than a mere reflection on past achievements.

“The president’s most effective economic message is contrast around whose side are you on, and compassion for the [pinch] of family budgets, and his agenda to bring down costs and raise incomes — and that lauding achievements — especially ones with abstract benefits — is less persuasive with voters,” Klain emphasized, as reported by POLITICO.

Andrew Bates, White House Deputy Press Secretary and Senior Communications Adviser, reiterated Biden's commitment to addressing economic challenges and promoting policies aimed at supporting middle-class families in response to Klain's remark.

The White House and its allies have notably moved away from using the term “Bidenomics” to describe the president's economic policies. Biden has refrained from using the term since January 25, according to an Axios analysis.

Klain's comments mark a rare instance of a prominent figure within Biden's inner circle openly questioning the current White House strategy.

Klain's departure from the administration in February of the previous year has not diminished his influence or his willingness to challenge the administration's tactics. As he is known for his assertive political approach and has long emphasized the importance of addressing economic concerns, particularly the cost of living.

Klain was particularly focused on the price of gas in the lead-up to the 2022 midterms, monitoring the average national price daily. He has also cautioned against prematurely celebrating progress on inflation, highlighting ongoing concerns about the financial strain felt by many Americans.
