Former President Donald Trump reaffirmed his hardline stance on immigration during a campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and mainstream media outlets are in a frenzy over his rhetoric.

Trump vowed on Tuesday to forcibly repatriate the influx of illegal migrants crossing into the United States from the southern border, regardless of the reluctance of their home countries.

“When I'm president, instead of asking you to cram illegal aliens into your homes, I'll tell you that the illegal alien trespassers … they must go back to their homes, they have to go back,” he asserted.

Trump denounced the ongoing surge of illegal immigration, emphasizing its detrimental impact on the nation's stability and resources.

“Because no country, no country can withstand this invasion. There isn’t a country in the world that can… I don’t care how much money – and we don’t, we owe $34 trillion. There’s no country in the world who could withstand the cost of this, and maybe be more important than actual dollar cost, the cost that it’s doing it’s wrecking our civilization, it’s destroying our country,” the former president added.

Trump pledged to implement robust border security measures from his first day back in office, initiating what he described as “the largest domestic deportation operation in the history of our country.”

He warned that if other nations refuse to repatriate their citizens, he will take decisive action to ensure their return, stating, “And if other countries say they won’t take them back ‘We’re not going to take them back.’ I will say that… uhhhh, yeah here they come. You’re just going to hold on, hold on to your britches, ’cause here they come. They’re coming back. Congratulations.”

Trump highlighted the impact of illegal immigration on public safety, asserting that suburban residents support his tough stance on border security. He remarked, “The suburban housewives actually like Donald Trump, you know why, because I'm the one who's gonna keep them safe … If you don't want illegal aliens crawling through your windows and ransacking your drawers, then you must vote for … the fact that we have to throw crooked Joe Biden out of office.”

Trump eventually unveiled a new campaign slogan, “Stop Biden's Border Bloodbath,” aimed at refocusing attention on what he perceives as the failures of Biden's immigration policies.

The LA Times is one outlet that took particular offense to the new slogan, calling it “inflammatory rhetoric.” It also blasted the former president for using dehumanizing language “that those who study extremism warn increases the risk of violence” when referring to illegal immigrants.

Reuters also snubbed Trump over his use of “animals” and “not human” for aliens. The outlet claimed Trump was “resorting to the degrading rhetoric he has employed time and again on the campaign trail,” then criticized him for his “foreboding tone” when dubbing the 2024 election “the final battle.”

Reuters continued by fact-checking Trump's claim that immigrants crossing the border with Mexico illegally have escaped from prisons and asylums. “Researchers say people living in the U.S. illegally do not commit violent crimes at a higher rate than native-born citizens,” it retorted.

Newsweek reported that ahead of Trump's speech, the Biden campaign noted the continued language and rhetoric used by the former president in regards to the border.

“Tomorrow, Donald Trump is coming to Grand Rapids where he is expected to once again try to politicize a tragedy and sow hate and division to hide from his own record of failing Michiganders,” Alyssa Bradley, the Biden campaign's Michigan communications director said.

Following his speech, Trump secured the endorsement of one of Michigan’s largest police unions.

“We were proud and proud to do it,” The Police Officers Association of Michigan President James Tignanelli said. “We were there in 2020. And I’ll tell you, we’re here in 2024.
