Princess of Wales Kate Middleton broke her silence on Friday after a period of absence from the public eye, revealing her diagnosis of cancer and the commencement of her chemotherapy treatment.
The announcement was preceded by a great deal of secrecy surrounding her recent major abdominal surgery at the London Clinic in January, fuelling speculation in the media and among the public.
“The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present,” Kate shared in a heartfelt videotaped statement.
She elaborated on the profound shock this diagnosis brought to her and Prince William, emphasizing their efforts to navigate this challenge privately for their children's well-being.
The type of cancer Kate is battling remains unspecified, and the royal couple has faced increased scrutiny since Kate's withdrawal from public appearances. Following her surgery, Kensington Palace confirmed the operation's success and her two-week hospital recovery but did not provide additional details. A memo from January 17 expressed Kate's gratitude for the public's interest and her wish to maintain normalcy for her children amidst this health crisis.
This announcement follows soon after news that her father-in-law, King Charles, is also facing a cancer battle, marking a period of carcinomic adversity in the world's most famous extant royal family.
