Man dies after being attacked by pack of dogs in south Kansas City, police say

MMMMMMMM
A man died after being mauled by a pack of dogs in south Kansas City, Missouri, last Saturday, police said.

On Saturday, Nov. 2, police responded to the 3200 block of East 80th Street on reports of an animal attack.

Police were told multiple dogs were attacking the victim, whose family identified to KSHB 41 News as Chris Culbertson.

A second victim contacted police and told them she was also attacked.

Culbertson was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, family and police told KSHB 41 News.

Angela Culbertson shared photos of her brother, Chris Culbertson, telling KSHB 41 that she wants people to remember him as a happy man who loved his family, his construction work, and living his life.

She also shared a surveillance video of him from a camera that picked up the attack on Culbertson.

The video shows he was riding his bike down east 80th Street when a group of dogs began to attack him on the street.

Culbertson said the 23 minute video shows seven dogs mauling her brother before help came.

"I want justice for my brother and everybody else that is dealing with these vicious dogs," Angela Culbertson said. "So many more dogs came; he couldn't fight them off anymore; he was reaching up trying, but he just couldn't."

She described the end of the video as an effort of firemen, police, and SWAT team officers trying to stop the attack before he was brought to the hospital.

"The doctor said there were over 300 dog bites, over 500 stitches, and 100 lacerations," Angela Culbertson said. "They ripped his cheek off, his chin, his heels of his feet."

KCPD and the Kansas City Pet Project are investigating the incident.

"It's the owners that should be at fault for this because they trained them to be vicious like this," Angela Culbertson said.

Chris Culbertson's family said the seven dogs are still at the address, and the fence appeared broken; they're waiting to hear from the KC Pet Project on what precautions and actions are being taken.

"I don't understand how a dog can attack a human and not have anything happen to them, nor the people that own the dogs that teach them how to be aggressive and mean to people don't have criminal action charges put on them," she said.

KSHB 41 News asked police about those claims and did not hear back.

KSHB 41 video shows the address in question appeared to have a fence with holes in it and one dog was outside.

The second victim was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.

Investigators are working with the KC Pet Project on the incident.

KSHB 41 received this statement from the animal nonprofit:
We are aware of a fatal dog attack that occurred late Saturday night and have been assisting KCPD officers in their investigation since that time. This is an active KCPD investigation, and our Animal Services Division is in communication with, and assisting, as they investigate this tragic incident.
