Shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake hits off Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia

A very strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred in the North Pacific Ocean 355 km (221 mi) from Kamchatka, Russia, in the early afternoon of Friday, Aug 30, 2024 at 3.24 pm local time (GMT +11).

The quake had a very shallow depth of 28 km (17 mi) and was felt widely in the area.

The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

No significant damage or impact is expected from this quake and no particular alert was issued.
