The tremor was felt across several surrounding provinces, prompting concern among residents. It was determined that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10.07 kilometers (6.25 miles).
The 6.0 magnitude earthquake was also felt in Diyarbakir, Tunceli and Elazig.
Following the earthquake, education was suspended for one day in Elazig and Malatya provinces.
Malatya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Sami Er said: "Regarding the Kale-centered earthquake, there have been no reported problems so far. Our field assessments are ongoing."
Authorities closely following development
Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya reported that all teams of AFAD and related institutions have started field surveys regarding the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Kale district of Malatya at 10.46 a.m.
In a statement made on his social media account, Yerlikaya said: "In the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 in the Kale district of Malatya, all teams of AFAD and related institutions started field assessments."
Stating that they are closely following the developments regarding the earthquake, which was also felt in neighboring provinces, Yerlikaya said, "I wish our citizens affected by the earthquake get well soon. May God protect our country and nation from disasters."
Citizens in Tunceli and Erzincan took to the streets after feeling the earthquake. Erzincan Governor Hamza Aydogdu said, "There is no problem in our city right now." Tunceli Governor Bulent Tekbiyikoglu also reported that there is no negative situation in the city for the moment.
'All relevant institutions of state on duty'
Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Numan Kurtulmus conveyed his good wishes to the citizens affected by the earthquake in Malatya, which was also felt in neighboring provinces.
In a message shared on his social media account, Kurtulmus said, "I convey my good wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake that occurred in Malatya and was also felt in neighboring provinces. All relevant institutions of our state are on duty and with our people. May God protect our country and nation from all kinds of disasters."
