Cats are generally known to be cute and independent, but they can also be fierce and protective. There's even footage of cats fighting off alligators and bears!

Throughout the years, there've been many instances of cats protecting or alerting their families in all kinds of dangerous situations. Below you'll find 10 remarkable stories of cats saving lives.

1. Thor Saved His Family Of Four

On August 30th, 2022, a family in Oakland County, was saved by their kitten Thor from carbon monoxide poisoning by alerting them in time. The Oakland Press reports:

According to the Farmington Hills Fire Department, the story unfolded Aug. 30 for the Stamper Family — Ron and Heidi, along with their daughter Paige, 13, and son Quinn, 11 — during a power outage caused by a summer storm. To keep their appliances running, the Stampers were using a portable generator, set up in their garage, and had gone to sleep for the night. Unbeknownst to them, the garage door accidentally was closed while the generator was running, exposing the family to deadly carbon monoxide gas, silently building up in their home.

But thanks to Thor, the family's lives were spared.

The kitten first awakened Heidi Stamper with a screeching cry and appeared to be sick. Heidi took Thor outside, saw that his condition improved and then brought him back inside. But she soon lost consciousness, overcome by the carbon monoxide. Fortunately, Thor resumed his screeching, awakening Paige and Quinn who were able to get their semi-conscious parents out of the house.

A crew from the Farmington Hills Fire Department called to the scene transported the family to Beaumont Hospital in Farmington Hills. Heidi and the children needed specialized care for carbon monoxide poisoning and were flown to Promedica Hospital in Toledo.

Fire Chief Jon Unruh told Inside Edition: "Thor played a crucial role in saving the family of four." Heidi, the mother, said: "If it wasn't for Thor, we wouldn't be here. He saved our lives."


2. Taz Alerted Family In Time When Fire Broke Out
On a cold night in January 2012, a Lancaster County family's cat Taz meowed loudly when fire broke out waking up one of his owners, John Rinehart. He told wgaltv: "The minute I woke up, I saw smoke, I couldn't see the mirror."

John and his wife then grabbed all their pets and went outside. Taz's heroic act nominated him for the Pets of Valor Award. "I don't like cats, but he's alright," said John to wgaltv, while his wife said that she'll be forever indebted to him.


3. Tony Saved His Owner From A Fire By Alerting Her In Time

Robin Lawson from Ohio rescued her cat on the day he was scheduled to be euthanized and as she tells Animal Planet, "11 years later, he rescued me." Robin was asleep in bed with her dog as the apartment caught fire. She woke up when Tony started meowing consistently. She told Animal Planet:

"I was woken up by Tony meowing. Black smoke just keeps rolling in and I'm screaming for Tony the whole time. I feel myself just diving out the window. Tony is still in the apartment. Firefighters arrived. He was on fire, and he was gone, so the firefighters revived him. His paws and belly were on fire, he had third degree burns."

"What [the firefighters] did means more to me, you can lose everything, you can lose everything and as long as you can walk away with the creatures that you love, then it's a success," Robin said. Dr. David Kocher of Towne and Country Animal Clinic, told WRGT-TV that Tony was the worst case he's seen who had survived. "He was huffing and puffing. It was very close for a while," Dr. Kocher said.

4. Fluffy Saved His Owner's Life After He Slipped And Fell

In late June, 2020, Ron Williams, an 84-year-old resident of Sturgis, Michigan, was saved by his cat Fluffy. He slipped in the shower and couldn't move for almost 16 hours. His arm was pinned under him. He then remembered that his cellphone was on the counter and that his cat Fluffy was in the bathroom with him.

While lying on the floor, he said: "Fluffy ring-a-ding, ring-a-ding Fluffy... You're my only hope." Five minutes later, he felt something in his hand, his phone. In an interview with FOX 17 WXMI, he said: "I relive it a million times and what if he wouldn't have been there with me? I'd be dead today."

He adoped Fluffy just a few weeks before the incident. "I looked at him and I just fell in love with him," he told FOX 17 WXMI. He also said that whenever the phone would ring he'd say "ring-a-ding", but he didn't know that Fluffy would pick up on that. I'm glad he did!


5. Billy Saved His Owner's Life By Alerting Her Of A Heart Attack

Sam, a 42-year-old woman, was woken up in the middle of the night by her cat Billy. It was unusual, Sam said, as he's never woken her up in the night before. "He never bothers you, he doesn't wake you up for food," she said.

Once she woke up, she realised she couldn't move and felt pain down her right side. She'd called for her mom and then was taken to the hospital where doctors told her she'd suffered a heart attack in her sleep. She told YouTube channel Zenger:

It was the early hours of last Monday morning and he was just meowing, meowing and meowing which he doesn't do, because he's a quiet cat and he jumped on top of me, wouldn't leave me and he woke me up. But I just woke up in a sweat and my arms were really heavy, it was very painful and my back was hurting.

It was just the fact that I was sweating and he woke me up. He doesn't do that normally, because he doesn't like me, he's more my mom's cat, so he would've done it to my mom I think more. But it's just the fact that he was meowing and jumped on me and sat on me and wouldn't leave me.

Well, I think he saved my life, because when I got to the hospital, they told me I was having a heart attack. If he hadn't woken me up I don't think I wouldn't have woken up for another few hours when my alarm went off for work. I think he saved my life. Just by waking me up.

6. Rusty Also Alerted His Owner Of A Heart Attack

In 2011, a 10-year-old cat named Rusty, saved the life of his owner, 66-year-old Claire Nelson, by alerting her of a heart attack in time. Claire adopted Rusty two years earlier for which she's very thankful.

On June 8th, 2011, she was feeling ill all night. She thought it was due to indigestion from too many sweets, but Rusty would keep jumping up on her and meowing every time she would sit or lie down.

She told wgaltv: "Every time I tried to sit down or go back to bed and lie down, the cat would jump up on me, put his paws on my leg, pawing at my chest, letting out these horrible guttural meows, it was totally out of character for him." That made Claire suspect that something more could be going on.

Eventually, she called 911 and was taken to the hospital where doctors told her she'd suffered a heart attack. Two stents were put in her coronary artery. Wgaltv reports that her doctor joked that she had a CAT scan. Claire told wgaltv:

Without Rusty, I don't think I'd be here today and Rusty would be looking for another home. [...]

The best thing I ever did was go to the Humane Society and adopt this cat. Because at the time I thought maybe I was saving his life. It turned out he saved mine.

7. Binx Saved Oakley The Dog From Coyotes

In Oklahoma, a 6-year-old dog called Oakley was attacked by two coyotes, but was saved in time thanks to Binx, the family's black cat. Binx was actually a neighborhood cat who showed up one day when she was about two months old.

The family captured the attack with their porch camera. On November 30th, 2023, the day of the attack, the family's two other big dogs were outside. The owner, Lane Dyer, let Oakley out to go to the bathroom. While Oakley was doing his business, he was suddenly attacked by a coyote. Soon after, another coyote appeared. Then, Binx the cat showed up and went right at them, scaring the coyotes off. Oakley then ran inside.

According to the owner Lane, poor Oakley was cut open and was gushing blood from the attack. They rushed her to the vet. Thankfully, she's recovering.

The owner told KCAU-TV Sioux City:

"Binx jumped down and scared them off, it was the craziest thing ever. She knew exactly what was going on — with no hesitation, she acted.

Never in a million years would I have expected a cat to do that."

8. Binky Fights Off A Would-Be Burglar

In 2017, a burglar was climbing in a window at a house in Indianapolis around midnight. Thankfully, Binky the cat, put a stop to it.

Around midnight, the owner, Cynthia Kootz, heard a noise in the backyard. She went out and she checked the garage and didn't see anything, so she turned the lights off in the garage and locked it. Minutes later, the would-be burglar, started banging and kicking on Cynthia's front window trying to convince her to open the door.

He told her that he was being chased by men who were going to kill him. Cynthia refused, after which the man tried to enter through the window. She told WTHR: "Next thing I knew, his hand went through that thing and next thing I knew Binky went after him."

The man then tried to get in a second time. "Binky blew up like a balloon and got him again!" Cynthia told WTHR. The police captured the man and arrested him for vandalism and residential entry. WTHR reported that officers had to call paramedics to treat the 41-year-old man's wounds from Binky.


9. Willow Helped Prevent Her Owner From Slipping Into A Diabetic Coma

In 2023, 51-year-old Amanda Jameson lost consciousness at home. Amanda is diabetic and that night her blood sugar was dangerously low. Her cat Willow noticed and ran downstairs. Willow bit Amanda's partner Ray Sherwood who fell asleep in front of the TV in his hand. After he woke up, Willow led him upstairs to where Amanda was.

That's when Ray realized Amanda was unresponsive and called an ambulance. At the hospital, doctors said she was very close to slipping into a diabetic coma. Thankfully, she was treated in time.

She told CBS News: "She actually did save my life. Because I wouldn't have been here otherwise. I wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for her. I love her more than ever, I can't thank her enough and she's the world to me."


10. Thanks To Mia Her Owner Caught Cancer Early

One day in June 2018, in Albany, Oregon, rescue cat Mia, who was adopted a couple of years earlier, sat on her owner, Michelle Pearson's, chest. She sniffed her right breast and looked at her and did it again.

Michelle and her husband Will felt a lump in the area Mia was sniffing. They then went for a check-up, and days later she received a phone call that she has stage two breast cancer. Michelle and Will told KETK NBC:

"Whatever she did was a gift. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, she just got up on my chest and she sniffed that breast and then looked in my face, sniffed the spot again and looked in my face and I tried to shove her off and she came back up and lied down on that right breast and just looked at me like "I'm trying to tell you something."

Because we caught it this early, my prognosis is much better.

I tell people, maybe I rescued her, but I feel like she rescued me right back."

Her partner added: "We've always loved that cat, but now... the cat gets anything it wants. Whatever it wants. As much as it wants. In my mind the cat saved her life."
