On Tuesday morning, parts of Lithuania woke up to several centimetres of snow.
According to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service (LHMT), it snowed practically all over the country on Monday.
According to the 8:00 data, the thickest snow cover was in the Panevėžys, Šiauliai, and Radviliskis districts, where it reached 12 - 17 centimetres.
The heavy snowfall resulted in a cover of wet snow on trees, wires, and various structures. It broke or bent tree branches, leaving some residents without electricity and some roads impassable.
However, wintry weather is not expected to stay in Lithuania. Temperatures are forecast to start rising again on Tuesday, reaching around 20 degrees at the end of the week.
According to Donatas Valiukas, head of the Climate and Research Division at the LHMT, the snow should not be too surprising.
"Snow used not to be uncommon in April. In general, the first half of April used to be the time when the snow accumulated during the winter melted and the spring floods took place," he said.
In his words, people are probably more surprised by the weather contrasts.
"It was anomalously warm at the end of March and the beginning of April, which led to very early vegetation and flowering of plants, and now this snow is surprising," Valiukas said.
