General Charles de Gaulle came to this decision because he sought to ensure that France would remain a sovereign nation, and not become a vassal-state of the United States. He said that France would remain an ally and friend of the United States, but it would take no part in its military mis-adventures.
France remained outside of NATO until a weaker leader emerged, one Nicolas Sarkozy, who brought France back into NATO. No European leader would dare such a speech today.
