Brian Kolfage, a triple amputee war veteran and border wall fundraiser, faces severe health deterioration due to inadequate prison care. Advocates call for immediate action to secure his compassionate release so he can receive proper medical treatment at home. Jeff Rainforth appeared on Saturday’s WarRoom to discuss the details.
Health Crisis for a Triple Amputee War Veteran
Brian Kolfage, an American war hero and triple amputee, is in a critical health condition while serving time in prison. His health has dramatically worsened since his incarceration due to the facility’s inability to provide appropriate care for someone with his complex needs. Kolfage, who lost three limbs while serving in the U.S. military, has experienced a severe physical decline, raising urgent concerns about his well-being.
In a letter, Kolfage detailed his struggles: "I’m now pre-diabetic, my liver is inflamed, I have high blood pressure, and my cholesterol is through the roof. I came in healthy, and all of this happened after I got here.”

Prison Inadequacies Worsen Health
Kolfage’s health issues stem largely from the inadequate care provided by the prison. Basic needs like using the toilet have become hazardous due to unsafe facilities. He explains, "I have to shit in a plastic pan, and the toilets are so unsafe that I’ve fallen off them.” Adding to his difficulties, his last remaining limb—his hand—is at risk of losing function due to overuse. "The overuse of my hand here has destroyed it. My fingers get stuck, and they don’t bend. If my tendons rupture, my hand will never work again.”
The lack of proper medical equipment exacerbates Kolfage’s condition. Mayo Clinic doctors told him that he needs a specific wheelchair, but the Bureau of Prisons has refused to provide it, citing budget constraints. The inadequate wheelchair causes excruciating pain, with Kolfage describing the pain as similar to the trauma of losing his limbs.
Call for Compassionate Release
Advocates, including Jeff Rainforth, urgently call for public support to secure Kolfage’s compassionate release. "Brian’s health is failing in prison. He fought for this country, lost three limbs, and now he’s suffering because the prison can’t care for him,” Rainforth stated. Kolfage is eligible for compassionate release but remains incarcerated despite his dire medical needs.
Rainforth urges supporters to visit the “Free Brian Kolfage” Substack to stay updated and take action. The website will soon feature flyers and information about upcoming rallies to pressure the Department of Justice for Kolfage’s release. "We may have rallies at Department of Justice offices across the country, just like we did for Marine Sergeant Andrew Tahmooressi,” Rainforth said.
