Claremont McKenna College vowed in a statement obtained by The Daily Wire to protect students who are in the country illegally and urged non-citizen international students to return to campus prior to Donald Trump’s inauguration, pointing to California’s status as a sanctuary state.
The memo from Claremont’s Dean of Students outlines how the college plans to support students who are in the country illegally and subvert Trump’s impending immigration crackdown.
“Presidential transitions in the U.S. may result in shifts in immigration policy,” the email says. “Some of our students, especially those who are not U.S. citizens, have understandable questions and concerns about the future U.S. policy and its impact on them and their families.”
The memo also urged foreign students to return to campus before Trump takes office on January 20, 2025, citing policy against state law enforcement collaborating with federal immigration enforcement officers.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we encourage students who are traveling from an international location, especially if you are not a U.S. citizen, to return to the U.S. by Sunday, January 19, 2025,” the email says. “Please note that, since 2017, California law … severely limits state and local law enforcement from investigating, interrogating, detaining, detecting, or arresting persons for immigration enforcement purposes.”
Trump has pledged to carry out the “largest mass deportation campaign in American history,” a policy position that a strong majority of Americans favor according to recent polling.
The email goes on to detail how the college would support those in the country illegally, including by connecting them immigration lawyers.
“Students without legal status who are receiving financial aid and are interested in speaking confidentially with an immigration lawyer for a free initial consultation, should contact DT Graves or Jimmy Doan.”
“In compliance with state and federal law,” the college will “provide maximum support to undocumented students,” it added.
One member of the Claremont community said the email is part of a “disturbing trend” wherein the college is increasingly led by “activist faculty” and “woke students.”
“It is not right that my tuition goes to subsidize illegal aliens on my campus when they don’t qualify for other forms of government financial aid. It is even worse when our federal government is finally going to do something about it under Trump that CMC is stepping in to protect these illegal aliens enrolled here,” the individual told The Daily Wire.
“The dean and others in leadership have become more and more beholden to this loud group of woke professors and students,” he added, noting that “the incentive structure has changed and they are becoming more beholden to the woke on our campus.”
Claremont McKenna did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
