Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) — who became the first current Democrat officeholder to publicly call on President Joe Biden to step down as the party’s presidential nominee — said that his constituents overwhelmingly want to get rid of Biden as the party’s nominee.
Doggett made the remarks on MSNBC Tuesday afternoon during an interview with host Hallie Jackson.
He said that he was so disturbed by Biden’s disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump that “the next morning, I was out to talk on the floor of Congress with our leadership, and with as many of my colleagues as I could find, to express the view that it was time for a replacement and for President Biden to step aside.”
“Coming home to Texas this weekend, I would say that the input from my constituents has been 10-1 in favor of replacing President Biden on the ticket,” he added.
He said that he has heard from other members of Congress following his call for Biden to step down, but he did not indicate what they said.

“I thought it was time for me to speak up,” he said. “Not for any self gain, but because I think the risk to our country is so great.”
He said that Democrats have serious fears right now that Republicans will also win the House and the Senate in 2024.
He said that the process to replace Biden “will be messy” and “chaotic,” but that it was needed to stop Trump.
