Daily Wire host Matt Walsh reacted to President Joe Biden ending his presidential campaign on Sunday by pointing out a major issue with the development, saying that Biden’s decision shows the country is in the “most dangerous time in modern American history.”

“For the next five months we will have a president who has publicly admitted that he is mentally and physically unfit for the job. This is the most dangerous time in modern American history,” Walsh posted on X.

In a second post, Walsh called on Republicans to pressure Biden to step down as commander-in-chief.

“Every Republican needs to go on the record right now calling for Biden to be immediately removed from office,” Walsh wrote. “If he is not competent to run for re-election then he is not competent to remain in the White House.”

Biden, 81, announced his decision not to run for a second term in a letter to the public that was released on Sunday afternoon. In the letter, which comes less than four months before the 2024 election, Biden wrote that “while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Calls for Biden to end his presidential campaign started with a few voices in the Democratic Party after the president’s disastrous debate performance against Republican nominee Donald Trump on June 27. During the CNN debate, Biden appeared tired and struggled to answer the moderators’ questions. The pressure on Biden to step aside and allow another candidate to run against Trump has grown over the past three weeks with dozens of House Democrats and multiple Senate Democrats joining the calls for their party leader to end his re-election bid.

After the debate, Biden and his campaign remained confident that he would stay in the race and defeat Trump despite numerous polls and public opinion casting more doubt on Biden’s chances. However, as time moved on, Biden reportedly became more receptive to those urging him to quit the race.

Biden’s unprecedented announcement on Sunday sets up a potentially chaotic Democratic National Convention next month as the party will have to decide who to nominate. Shortly after announcing the end of his campaign, Biden threw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place as the Democrats’ nominee.

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” Biden said. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
