At a campaign rally in Wildwood, New Jersey, on Saturday, former President Donald Trump received an endorsement from Hall of Fame NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who announced the Democratic Party had fumbled his support.

“I just wanted to say I grew up a Democrat and I’ve always been a Democrat until I met this man right here,” Taylor told the crowd, referring to Trump. And I tell you what, he will not have to worry nobody in my family ever voting for a Democrat again.”

As cheers erupted, Taylor stepped aside and embraced Trump, who wore one of his red “Make America Great Again” hats. Taylor’s former New York Giants teammate, Ottis Anderson, walked up to the microphone and spoke.

“Don’t you just love that guy? I tell you it has been a very exciting day. You guys, not one person left here. You’re still here yelling and screaming,” he said. “So my word is: Wildwood, are you in the house? I can’t hear you. Wildwood, are you in the house? Thank you guys for all your support.”

Chants of “U.S.A.” rang out among the attendees as the NFL legends, both two-time Super Bowl champions, walked off the stage. Trump then complimented the “two great guys.”

The event took place in South New Jersey, on the Jersey Shore, and featured Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), who in 2019 announced that he was leaving the Democratic Party and declared his support of Trump during the first impeachment effort against the former president.

North Dakota Republican Governor Doug Burgum, a former 2024 rival to Trump who is now under consideration to be his running mate, also made an appearance at the rally.

Up to 100,000 people attended, a Wildwood spokeswoman told the Associated Press.

During his remarks, Trump claimed that New Jersey — which he lost in the 2016 and 2020 elections — was a state in which he could emerge victorious in the 2024 contest.

“As you can see today, we’re expanding the electoral map because we are going to officially play in the state of New Jersey,” Trump said. “We’re going to win the state of New Jersey.”
