The United States Secret Service has been under increased scrutiny since the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump which occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where they were supposed to be protecting him. Their solution, according to the latest reports, is not to step up security measures but to urge Trump to stop holding outdoor rallies.

“Secret Service encourages Trump campaign to stop outdoor rallies,” The Washington Post headline read, and the article cited several sources who claimed that Secret Service officials had “encouraged Donald Trump’s campaign to stop scheduling large outdoor rallies and other outdoor events with big crowds.”

While no one associated with the Trump campaign commented on The Washington Post’s story, Fox News reported that Donald Trump Jr. had recently weighed in on whether his father might scale back the massive outdoor events: “He said that his father would not like that at all. He loves those outdoor rallies.”

Critics were quick to call out the Secret Service, arguing that they were blaming the victim instead of accepting responsibility for past failures and simply doing their job.

“I have asked the Secret Service to stop letting people shoot former presidents in the head,” The Federalist’s Sean Davis said.

“Hell. No. The Biden-Harris administration, including Attorney General Merrick Garland and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, must spend the necessary resources to ensure Trump is fully protected at all of his events. That is their job. If they can’t do it, step down,” Mike Davis, president of the Article III Project, argued.
