President Donald Trump asked his trade team to negotiate “tailor-made deals” for each country that is willing to come to an agreement on tariffs.
During Tuesday’s press briefing at the White House, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump met with his trade team in the morning and directed them to craft specific deals tailored to each country’s markets, exports, and imports. According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, around 70 countries are willing to seek a new trade agreement with the Trump administration as nations hope to avoid steep tariffs and a potential trade war.
“The entire administration has always said that President Trump is willing to pick up the phone and talk,” Leavitt said. “And the president met with his trade team this morning, and he directed them to have tailor-made trade deals with each and every country that calls up this administration to strike a deal.”
“And listen, each and every one of these trade deals should be tailored and unique based on that country’s markets, based on that country’s exports, the imports here in the United States of America — what makes the most sense for the American worker and for our industry,” Leavitt added. “The president is focused on putting America first.”

Trump said that his trade team would soon meet with leaders from Japan and South Korea in hopes of hashing out a deal to secure fair trade. The European Union, Israel, and Vietnam have also shown a willingness to negotiate with Trump after the president hit nearly every country in the world with tariffs last week.
Leavitt told reporters that Trump is willing to talk to any country “that picks up the phone,” adding that “the phones have been ringing off the hook.”
“The world knows that they need the United States of America,” Leavitt said. “They need our markets, they need our consumers. The president has a lot of leverage on his side as he has the best economy and the best country in the world that he leads, and he knows that. And it’s about dang time that we finally have a president who uses that economic leverage to benefit American workers, and that’s what the president is trying to do.”

While the Trump administration appears confident that numerous countries will negotiate with the White House, China’s willingness to talk remains in question. China hit the United States with retaliatory tariffs after Trump rolled out his 34% tariff on the communist country last week. On Monday, Treasury Secretary Bessent slammed the Chinese government for choosing “to isolate itself by retaliating and doubling down on previous negative behavior.”
Trump threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on China if it doesn’t “withdraw” its retaliatory tariff on the United States. A 104% tariff will be imposed on China at 12:01 Wednesday morning unless it agrees to Trump’s terms. The president said on Tuesday that China “wants to make a deal.”
“China also wants to make a deal, badly, but they don’t know how to get it started. We are waiting for their call. It will happen! GOD BLESS THE USA.” he wrote on Truth Social.
